Lesson Journal
We began the lesson with desk bells, exploring the pitches Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La. I led with echo patterns to encourage listening and accurate pitch matching, gradually preparing for Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Sabera and I enjoyed singing and playing together, and we worked through the melody on the bells, reinforcing pitch awareness and solfege connection.
Next, we moved to the piano with Water Lilies by W. Gillock. Measures 1–2 were reviewed to reinforce memory and hand coordination. I then introduced measures 3–4, teaching by rote. Sabera listened closely, imitated patterns, and began to connect the new section with the opening measures. We also revisited Hot Cross Buns and Merrily We Roll Along to strengthen familiarity and comfort with simple melodies.
For technical development, we reviewed Exercises 1–4 from the Russian School of Piano Playing and introduced Exercises 5–6. The focus was on controlled, clear articulation using only finger number 3. We practiced this first in the right hand, then the left, while singing along to reinforce both rhythm and tone production. Sabera is starting to show eveness and independence in hand use.
To conclude, we reviewed the PPA worksheet covering treble and bass clef recognition. I introduced rhythmic values — quarter note, half note, dotted half note, and whole note. She worked on identifying and naming each note, mentally connecting them to their time values.
